Round 4 Race Report – Racetown 395 – Adelanto, CA
Open A – 1st Place (1st in points)
After sitting on the sidelines and scouting out lines during the 450 A race I was ready to get going in the Open race. I got a decent jump but was pushed wide coming out of the first turn and left the motocross track in tenth place. I kept my cool and moved up to sixth at the end of the first lap. Luckily for me a track routing mistake put us into the endurocross section, normally used just for the Pro race, and I was able to move into third place when we exited the section. The top two guys had a little gap and I was able to close it down on the second lap and moved into first on the third lap. I never looked back and kept a good pace going and finished first with just over a one minute gap. I was happy to get that first win for the year and I took over the points lead.

Pro 2 – 6th Place (3rd in points)
When the gate dropped for the Pro 2 race I got a decent jump but got pushed out wide rounding the first corner and was stuck midpack. I made a few quick passes to move up into the top ten after two laps. The next few laps I pushed hard and moved into sixth at the halfway point of the race and then I developed a stomach ache that stopped me in my tracks. I was doing all I could to just keep going but I dropped back to seventh. Last lap I pushed hard and was able to take sixth place back to conserve my third place position in the points. I was a bit disappointed with my finish but am looking forward to the next round at the beautiful Honey Lake MX Track in Milford, CA.

Baja 1000 2009, Kawasaki Race Report

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a week since the Baja 1000, and I’m sure many of you know how it went. We came so close. Here is a basic run down as how the race went.

Start to Nuevo Junction mile 101: Robby Bell
Started 5th and passed into the physical at mile 11. At Nuevo junction was 8 1/2 minutes over 12X (5 1/2 minutes adjusted time)

Nuevo Junction to Borrego mile 201; Destry Abbott
Increased the lead to over 11 minutes at one point. At Borrego, we changed both wheels and pulled cover off air filter. We now had a 9 min. 50 sec. lead.

Borrego to end of Matomi Wash mile 302: Ryan Penhall
At the end of Matomi we changed the rear wheel and air filter. The lead was now 1 min. 6 sec.

Matomi wash to Mikes Road mile 417: Robby Bell
Extended lead to over 7 min. Crashed at mile 414. Assessed bike damage and removed right side plate. Bike left on Mikes road with 4 min. lead.

Mikes road to El Coyote mile 465: Destry Abbott
Road with bent bars and smashed pipe. Extended lead to 6 min. Changed silencer. Left El Coyote with 5 min lead.

El Coyote to Valle De Trinadad meadow mile 505: Conner Penhall
Choose not to replace bars, Changed wheels, air filter, installed lights, installed right side panel. 12X did same. Left with 2 1/2 minute lead.

Valle De Trinadad meadow to finish mile 672: Steve Hengeveld
Had to change battery at pit 14, cost 30 seconds. At the finish, we were 1min 3 sec. ahead.

With a 3 minute start gap, this means we were 2nd by 1 min. 57 sec.

Looking back, we darn near won the race with only a 2 month effort. We have helped Honda win this race 9 times and knew how strong their effort is. But to come this close and not get the win is a tough pill to swallow. Bruce Penhall did an absolutely amazing job putting this team together and I’m gratefull to him for having us on board. We know there are a few stratagy things we can do that would have helped. Heres how I see it.

Rider split stratadies can be improved.
The prerunning light set up needs to be the same as the race bike. (sorry Steve)
Final bike set up needs to be set before going to baja

On the positive side,

The bike ran flawless
Fuel milage was better than expected
The team work was the best I have ever been around
It was the closest bike finish ever at this race
It was the first time in 12 years that Honda has not crossed the finish line first.

We are trying to get an effort going for next year. We know we have what it takes to win and will be back next year with the intent of doing just that. With nearly twice the time to prepare for San Felipe as we had for the 1000, and with an already proven bike, 2010 looks to be a great year for Green in Baja.

Woessner scores with WORCS title

Maria Forsberg finished 2nd in the Mesquite Nevada, WORCS Women’s Pro race on her Maxxis, FMF, GPR, Rekluse, KTM 250 XC F. Maria’s finished 3rd in overall WORCS Pro Women’s points. Her record stands at 4 WORCS Championships in 7 years. This just 1 week after from returning from Portugal where she finished 2nd in the World riding the Women’s class at ISDE 6 days. Her Maxxis, FMF, GPR, Rekluse, KTM 300 XC ran perfect for all 6 days. The U.S. Women’s team finished 4th overall. Previous to ISDE Maria finished 2nd at the Glen Helen WORCS race. She just moved into the lead on the last lap but a crash near the end had Maria and Penny Cyrus drag racing to the finish with Maria finishing 2nd by less than a bike length after 1 hour of racing. Maria caps of the year with the rest of RPM Racing Team in Las Vegas at the Maxxis Endurocross November 21st.

Brenden Ritzman, riding a Maxxis, FMF, GPR, KTM 450 XC F, finished 8th at the Round 10 WORCS Pro race. Brenden closes the WORCS season 8th in Pro points and 2nd in Western AMA National Hare Scrambles points. Brenden has 4 top 10s in a row now at WORCS and we are very excited for season. With our RPM, KTM Racing Team starting to jell we should be a Championship contender in 2010.

Bobby Prochnau, riding a Maxxis, FMF, GPR, RTR Performance, Rekluse, KTM 300 XC finished 8th at the Denver Colorado Endurocross. KTM’s Taddy Blasuak won the event and the Championship. Previous to that Bobby and his KTM 450 XC F, finished 1st overall in the Canadian Enduro Championship. Bobby won all 8 events in a row. Totally undefeated in the National Series. Bobby capped that off with 2 more PNWMA Canadian Off Road wins in a row. Bobby is training for the Las Vegas Endurocross on a new KTM 300 XC. Hope to see you there.

Coming into this weekend, I knew I was prepared enough for a hot and tough weekend at Glen Helen Raceway. The track is known as a rough track that can throw you down to the ground in a heartbeat. This was my home track race since for me I only live 10 minutes away. I spent a lot of time testing at the track months before the race so I could have the best possible set up for this race. Unclassified I felt really good and super comfortable with the track. The track was almost the same as a local SRA GP race, so I was super happy. The 450A race started ok with an ok start then started going good by moving up throughout the field. Then everything went down hill about the mid way point of the race. I was behind my brother and we started pushing up our pace and it bit both of us. Dropping into a fast sand wash my brother was making a pass as the same time he was high siding off the bike. He crashed really hard and I saw the whole thing. I got on my brakes so hard my front end washed out from under me and I ended up felling two big pops in my shoulder. I though that I had broke my shoulder or just separated it. I was in pain all day after the crash but it didn’t matter because I wanted to race the Open A and get into the Pro 2 race on Sunday also I was running 4th in Open A points so I want to better that position at the end of the year results.
By the time Open race came I was still in pain but I need to race. I got a dead last start but by the time we left the moto track I was running 5th and by the end of the lap I was 4th. I was right behind my brother again and I had thoughts going through my mind like “O gosh not again”. I got around him and was feeling ok but I wanted to get away in the early laps so if my shoulder couldn’t hold up I could back it down and still get a really good finish. That’s exactly what I did and ended up 5th, which I was really happy about.
Sunday I was really sore still and really couldn’t move my arm. I was going into the race just to have fun and finish. My started was mid pack around 10th. First time coming into the endurocross section there were people everywhere and I found a line and got through it clean and but the end of the second lap I was running 4th. All good things have to come to and end and it happen to me again. While going into a turn my front end tucked on me and I felt another pop in the bad shoulder and that was the end of my race. I was so pissed that all the work I did to get really for the race I got one good race. I went to the doctors right after the race and had x-rays done and they came back negative. I going to still take it easy for a few weeks until I have not more pain but ill be ready for the last round.

After winning the 6 hour race earlier in the year, we made plans to race the 12 hour and continue testing our set ups. Team riders Robby Bell and Jamie Lanza were joined by Ryan Abbatoye and Ty Renshaw. Third team rider, Taylor Robert, was at the Colorado MX National. With temperatures expected over 100 degrees, it was going to be a real test of both the riders and bike. You are allowed a second bike in impound for use in case the first bike has problems, or just to run a fresh bike later in the race. Our goal was to run only one bike to challenge our pit times for service or repair if needed.

Robby started the race with a 4th place start. He immediately shot to the lead and began pulling a lead. At the end of the first hour, he handed the bike to Jamie with over 2′30″ lead. Jamie continued the charge for the next hour and increased the gap to over four minutes. One lap later, we were in the pit for our first pit work. A rock must have kicked up into fork leg and nicked it. Instant blown seal, covering the brake caliper and pads. 1′16″ is what it took to change the left fork, complete brake system and front wheel.

Ryan and Ty were up next putting in good rides and continued to maintain the overall lead. The bike was running great, and everyone seemed to adapt to the suspension which was a compromise between 5′4″ 130 lbs, and 6′1″ 180 lbs.

A little over the half way point, the lead was up to seven minutes. Third place was now more than one lap down. It was time to do an air filter and rear wheel. Once again the pit went smoothly and we continued with a comfortable lead.

With about two hours to go, the lead was up to eleven minutes. We decided to change the rear brake pads and check over the bike one last time. Everything was good, but with the heat taking its toll on some riders, we backed it down to just to maintain an easy pace and save the bike. The last two laps were cruising with a little goon riding thrown in just to keep things fun.

At the finish, we had over seven minutes on second place, and over an hour on third. All the riders were solid and did exactly what was needed. Robby and Jamie both had the fastest laps of the race. The bike held up phenomenally well. Our mechanic, Phil Valdez, did a great job building the bike, which was the same bike that won the six hour.
