Round 4 Race Report – Racetown 395 – Adelanto, CA
Open A – 1st Place (1st in points)
After sitting on the sidelines and scouting out lines during the 450 A race I was ready to get going in the Open race. I got a decent jump but was pushed wide coming out of the first turn and left the motocross track in tenth place. I kept my cool and moved up to sixth at the end of the first lap. Luckily for me a track routing mistake put us into the endurocross section, normally used just for the Pro race, and I was able to move into third place when we exited the section. The top two guys had a little gap and I was able to close it down on the second lap and moved into first on the third lap. I never looked back and kept a good pace going and finished first with just over a one minute gap. I was happy to get that first win for the year and I took over the points lead.

Pro 2 – 6th Place (3rd in points)
When the gate dropped for the Pro 2 race I got a decent jump but got pushed out wide rounding the first corner and was stuck midpack. I made a few quick passes to move up into the top ten after two laps. The next few laps I pushed hard and moved into sixth at the halfway point of the race and then I developed a stomach ache that stopped me in my tracks. I was doing all I could to just keep going but I dropped back to seventh. Last lap I pushed hard and was able to take sixth place back to conserve my third place position in the points. I was a bit disappointed with my finish but am looking forward to the next round at the beautiful Honey Lake MX Track in Milford, CA.

‘Ridin 9 to 5’ at the Muc-Off 8 Enduro MTB – Race results

An unforgettable two-wheeled festival experience was delivered on Sunday 11th April at the six hundred acre private estate at Pippingford Park in East Sussex when 550 competitors gathered to take part in the Muc-Off 8, a unique new eight hour, eight mile enduro mountain bike race.

The sun shone for two days on an international field of competitors including the Norweigen Proteinfabrikken KTM Racing Team, which included the national XC Marathon cross-country champion Tor Halvor Bjornstad; corporate teams from Formula 1’s Force India, Mercedes and Red Bull and other competitors ranging from 19 to 61 years of age all taking part in the eight hour show-down.

With 1576 laps completed and a cummulative 12,608 miles ridden, the event went without a hitch with trained on-site paramedics having to deal with nothing more than one sprained ankle over the duration of the race.

Greg Saw, team manager and rider for Norwegian Proteinfabrikken/ KTM team comments on coming to England to take part and his first impressions of the Muc-Off 8 event; “It’s special for us to be here and riding as a team for team bonding and tactics and this event will help us prepare for the next Nordic 24 hour race. This is a refreshing and interesting format for an enduro race, and the course has a good mix of uphill, and challenging downhill to keep all the riders on their toes. The team element of the event means this is not just for elite riders.”

The Norweigen team went on to win the pairs category and also took the title for the fastest eight mile lap of the day at 40 minutes 07 seconds.

Competitors took up the gauntlet laid down by downhill world champion Steve Peat, who set a time on the downhill section of the course earlier in the year of 2 minutes 2 seconds. The downhill section was electronically split-timed and the fastest downhill time of 2 minutes and 7 seconds was set on the day by Mule Bar/Hargroves Cycles rider, Stuart Bowers.

‘Ridin 9 to 5,’ the objective of the Muc-Off 8 was for competitors and teams to complete as many laps as possible racing against time and each other within the eight hours with teams dictating their own strategy, using only one rider at a time on the course.

Muc-Off head man Alex Trimnell comments: “We wanted to create a fun laid-back event which was a challenge for elite riders and first timers alike and I couldn’t wish for a better atmosphere and vibe here today. We wanted our event to be unique and to design a varied course comprising downhill, cross-country and single track with a different enduro format, and from feedback we have had I think we achieved that. We also provided riders with free drinks, energy and nutrition through partner Clif Bar, and bike servicing with Cycle Surgery plus a free Muc-Off bike cleaning service throughout the day.”

Alex explains plans for the Muc-Off 8 2011; “Pippingford Park is a beautiful setting and a perfect venue for the Muc-Off 8 and there’s lots of space to grow the event and make it bigger and better next year. We want to create a bigger core bike cleaning area and more facilities such as a shower block and attract more competitors to enter the team disciplines, as well as attract further British and international pro riders, and more corporate teams.”

Race Report for Lake Havasu WORCS Race Round 3

Lake Havasu is always one of the biggest races of the year. It’s an awesome setting on the island in the middle of the lake. The course is very demanding with a moto section up on top, and deep sand whoops for the rest. There’s even a lagoon jump over the water. It’s tight, technical, and with lap times in the 6 minute range, you get double the amount of laps compared to other races.

In the Pros, Robby and JP were both looking for their best finishes of the year. In qualifying, Robby took sixth, his personal best. JP was looking good in practice, but got a flat front tire in qualifying and took a disappointing 16th.

In the race, Robby got off in sixth. He put on a great charge and moved into second on lap two. From here he ran up front until deep into the race when the flu he has been fighting caught up with him and he dropped back to sixth. I’m sending Robby’s race report for a more in depth story.

JP got off to a top ten start, but then had problems with his steering and needed a long pit stop for repairs. This killed any chance to challenge for a front spot. He salvaged fifteenth.

Justin rode hard all weekend, and his results continue to improve. He took 5th in the Pro-2s 5th in the 450A, and 9th in the Open A.

Jack rode well, but a smoked clutch slowed him and he took 7th in the ultra competitive 250F A class.

Mark Harstine started his weekend getting run over. Beat up and bloody, he raced on and came from 40th to 15th in the 450 B class.

Next Worcs race is at 395 Cycle Park near Victorville, CA. Robby will be over his bout with the flu, and is super motivated by his early run at Havasu. JP will have the bike problems handled, and looks to better his 6th place Primm finish. All of our guys will be testing at 395 and getting plenty of time on the track before the race so we will be more prepared than ever.

Round 2 Race Report – Primm Valley Resort – Primm, NV

450 A – 6th Place (3rd in points)

Primm is a new stop on the WORCS tour but I had done a race at this venue last year and had a lot of fun so I was looking forward to this race.  The course layout was much different than I had anticipated, it was very sandy fairly tight.  The 450 race was by far the most stacked, with 47 guys on the line I knew a good start would be key.  I got a good jump but was pinched off coming into the first corner and came out about mid pack.  I worked my way up to tenth after the first lap and kept moving up.  On the third lap my front brake rotor got hit by a rock so I was left without front brakes for the rest of the race.  I was able to keep picking off guys but a last lap incident with a lapper cost me a couple places and I finished up in sixth.

Open A – 3rd Place (2nd in points)

I knew that the track was going to be beat up for this race so I just wanted to get a good start and scout out lines for the Pro 2 race the next day.  I got a great jump and left the moto section in second place.  I made a quick pass to take the lead for a brief moment but dropped back to second by the end of the first lap.  I was trying to ride smooth and I found some good lines and conserved a good amount of energy for the Pro 2 race.  I was able to secure third place fairly easily.

Pro 2 – 6th Place

Since the venue doesn’t have a starting gate we we’re forced to have a dead engine start.  I felt confident in my dead engine starting ability but when the flag waved it took four or five kicks for me to get going.  So with my bad start I knew that I had my work cut out for me.  I came around the first lap in eighteenth place, dang it!  After the couple first laps I was sitting just outside the top ten but was still determined to move up farther.  On the tenth lap I finally broke into the top ten and could see a few guys just up in front of me.  I was able to catch up and pass a couple guys and on the last lap I knew I had to give it all I had.  I ran my fastest lap on the final lap passing one more guy and coming within eight seconds of fifth place.  I was a bit frustrated with my sixth place finish because I knew that I should be up in the top three.

WORCS series round 1 returned to Speedworld just outside Phoenix, AZ. The Worcs crew did an amazing job of getting the course ready for the weekend. With the previous weeks rains, it looked to be a real muddy mess. Not so! The rains let up and the course was great. A combination of MX, sand washes, arena cross, lots of tight corners in the offroad, and the Worcs Cross section for the pros. The weather was beautiful, 72 degrees, and partly cloudy.

The start of the pro race could have gone better for Robby and JP. Both seemed to get tangled with other riders and rounded the first corner around 25th. They pushed hard on the first lap and came through the pits in 18th (JP) and 19th (Robby). Even though these are 2 hour races, the start is still important as the leaders can check out while you are slowed down, trying to pass your way through. Robby continued attacking moving to 15th, then 12th. JP was a short distance behind, moving through as well.

Lap four was disaster for JP. His radiator hose split from a rock hit and he was forced into the pits for repair. 2 1/2 minutes later he was out, but was now at the back of the pack. Robby continued to push forward and by the midway point was 10th.

In the second hour, Robby continued his charge. With a half hour to go, he moved into 8th, passing some of the fastest riders in Worcs. JP was also working his way forward, and was pushing into the top 20.

At the finish, Robby’s charge ended at 8th, He was only 58 seconds from 4th and closing. JP was able to get back up to 18th. This was his first Pro race. While this isn’t what either rider hoped for, The lap times could have put them in the top 5.

In the Pro-2 race, Justin was another victim of a bad start. He worked hard the whole race and was able to take 7th at the finish.

Jack rode 3 races on the weekend. In the 250F-A he took 14th. Then in the 125-A, he rebounded and took the win. His last race was the 15-29 sport-A. In a large field and riding a 250F against 450s, he took 6th.

Mark rode 2 races. In the 15-29 sport-B, he was running well when his rear brake suddenly jammed. Unable to free it up, he was forced to the pits and ended up with 31st. In the 450-B, he holeshot, then struggled for the first half.  He then loosened up to put in a good ride and took 11th.

Overall, it was an okay start to the year. We all need to work really hard on our starts (except Mark).  There was a really big turn out in many of the A and B classes. This is good to see for the series. Everyone has learned what they need to work on and we all feel confident that improvements will come quickly. Some of the lap times were right there with the leaders, again starts are needed.

The year of 2010 the goals for riding this season will consist of finishing top five in every race attending, but personal goal would be to place on the podium at every Worcs race. With switching of bikes for the New Year, I am feeling comfortable riding Kawasaki, and confident with myself riding for the Precision Concepts Kal-Gard Kawasaki Team. The new team’s atmosphere I am riding for is comfortable, and organized. I am pushing myself to place better in my racing, but also to make my body stronger, and durable to remain strong for every race. Realizing that my appetite, my health, my body’s strength, and confidence in myself will make me stronger this season, allowing myself to exceed to my goal. I will retain all these goals with the help of my sponsors; Precision Concepts, Kal-Gard, AP Brakes, Fast Lane Motor Fuels, Pirelli, Muc-Off, QTM, Vicious Industries Clothing, Wossner Pistons, BRP, IMS, Scott Stabilizers, AME Grips, O’Neal, John Burr, Renthal, LA Sleeve, Townsend Knee Braces, RK Chains, and Hinson Clutches. Coming into 2010 I am really optimistic about the racing season. In 2009 I won the WORCS Open A Championship, finished 3rd in the WORCS 450 A Championship, and 6th in the WORCS Pro 2 Championship and look to better those results this year. Once again I will be backed by Kawasaki Team Green John Burr Cycles. We have created a strong relationship over the past years and look to tackle this season head on!

I will once again be competing in the 2010 WORCS Series in the Open A and Pro 2 classes. I will also be competing in the AMA West Coast Hare Scrambles and the AMA Big 6 GP Series in the A classes. If all goes well I will be moving up to the pro ranks in 2011.

I many of my 2009 sponsors have extended their help to me for 2010. Maxxis tires is on board along with Precision Concepts Suspension, AP Brakes, Wossner Pistons, Fastway, Maxima, Scott Goggles, FMF Exhaust, Spider Grips, SDG Seats, Hinson Clutch Components, Factory Effex, Zip Ty Racing, and IMS Products. Without help from these companies I would not be able to contest the 2010 season.

Baja 1000 2009, Kawasaki Race Report

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a week since the Baja 1000, and I’m sure many of you know how it went. We came so close. Here is a basic run down as how the race went.

Start to Nuevo Junction mile 101: Robby Bell
Started 5th and passed into the physical at mile 11. At Nuevo junction was 8 1/2 minutes over 12X (5 1/2 minutes adjusted time)

Nuevo Junction to Borrego mile 201; Destry Abbott
Increased the lead to over 11 minutes at one point. At Borrego, we changed both wheels and pulled cover off air filter. We now had a 9 min. 50 sec. lead.

Borrego to end of Matomi Wash mile 302: Ryan Penhall
At the end of Matomi we changed the rear wheel and air filter. The lead was now 1 min. 6 sec.

Matomi wash to Mikes Road mile 417: Robby Bell
Extended lead to over 7 min. Crashed at mile 414. Assessed bike damage and removed right side plate. Bike left on Mikes road with 4 min. lead.

Mikes road to El Coyote mile 465: Destry Abbott
Road with bent bars and smashed pipe. Extended lead to 6 min. Changed silencer. Left El Coyote with 5 min lead.

El Coyote to Valle De Trinadad meadow mile 505: Conner Penhall
Choose not to replace bars, Changed wheels, air filter, installed lights, installed right side panel. 12X did same. Left with 2 1/2 minute lead.

Valle De Trinadad meadow to finish mile 672: Steve Hengeveld
Had to change battery at pit 14, cost 30 seconds. At the finish, we were 1min 3 sec. ahead.

With a 3 minute start gap, this means we were 2nd by 1 min. 57 sec.

Looking back, we darn near won the race with only a 2 month effort. We have helped Honda win this race 9 times and knew how strong their effort is. But to come this close and not get the win is a tough pill to swallow. Bruce Penhall did an absolutely amazing job putting this team together and I’m gratefull to him for having us on board. We know there are a few stratagy things we can do that would have helped. Heres how I see it.

The prerunning light set up needs to be the same as the race bike. (sorry Steve)
Final bike set up needs to be set before going to baja

On the positive side,

The bike ran flawless
Fuel milage was better than expected
The team work was the best I have ever been around
It was the closest bike finish ever at this race
It was the first time in 12 years that Honda has not crossed the finish line first.

We are trying to get an effort going for next year. We know we have what it takes to win and will be back next year with the intent of doing just that. With nearly twice the time to prepare for San Felipe as we had for the 1000, and with an already proven bike, 2010 looks to be a great year for Green in Baja.

Woessner scores with WORCS title

Maria Forsberg finished 2nd in the Mesquite Nevada, WORCS Women’s Pro race on her Maxxis, FMF, GPR, Rekluse, KTM 250 XC F. Maria’s finished 3rd in overall WORCS Pro Women’s points. Her record stands at 4 WORCS Championships in 7 years. This just 1 week after from returning from Portugal where she finished 2nd in the World riding the Women’s class at ISDE 6 days. Her Maxxis, FMF, GPR, Rekluse, KTM 300 XC ran perfect for all 6 days. The U.S. Women’s team finished 4th overall. Previous to ISDE Maria finished 2nd at the Glen Helen WORCS race. She just moved into the lead on the last lap but a crash near the end had Maria and Penny Cyrus drag racing to the finish with Maria finishing 2nd by less than a bike length after 1 hour of racing. Maria caps of the year with the rest of RPM Racing Team in Las Vegas at the Maxxis Endurocross November 21st.

Brenden Ritzman, riding a Maxxis, FMF, GPR, KTM 450 XC F, finished 8th at the Round 10 WORCS Pro race. Brenden closes the WORCS season 8th in Pro points and 2nd in Western AMA National Hare Scrambles points. Brenden has 4 top 10s in a row now at WORCS and we are very excited for season. With our RPM, KTM Racing Team starting to jell we should be a Championship contender in 2010.

Bobby Prochnau, riding a Maxxis, FMF, GPR, RTR Performance, Rekluse, KTM 300 XC finished 8th at the Denver Colorado Endurocross. KTM’s Taddy Blasuak won the event and the Championship. Previous to that Bobby and his KTM 450 XC F, finished 1st overall in the Canadian Enduro Championship. Bobby won all 8 events in a row. Totally undefeated in the National Series. Bobby capped that off with 2 more PNWMA Canadian Off Road wins in a row. Bobby is training for the Las Vegas Endurocross on a new KTM 300 XC. Hope to see you there.

NICK BURSON & HUSQVARNA WIN ELSINORE GP ON WAY TO USDR TITLE
First ever win for Burson and a first Elsinore win for Husky in decades.

November 13, 2009 – Woodcliff Lake, NJ – With a championship almost in hand and the last race of the season just days away, most racers would be content to find a quiet place and hunker down before the final showdown. Not so for Zip-Ty Racing Husqvarna rider Nick Burson who’s zen was interrupted by a call from his boss Ty Davis, the owner and manager of Zip-Ty Racing.

Nick Burson”Ty suggested I race the Elsinore Grand Prix. I’d never entered the event before so I said ‘Why not?’ I hadn’t planned to race ’til the USDR final but Elsinore is close to home and it’d be good training if nothing else,” said Burson. “Now that it’s all over I’m glad that Ty called and proud to be able to list an Elsinore Grand Prix victory on my resume!”

Burson’s Elsinore race day began with a couple of Expert class laps that allowed he and Davis to prep Burson’s Husqvarna TXC 510 for the weekend’s main event The Harvey Mushman 100, which borrows its name from Steve McQueen who entered the 1970 Elsinore Grand Prix using the pseudonym. McQueen raced the event at the urging of then winner Malcolm Smith. The pair rode Husqvarna motorcycles and they both figured prominently in Bruce Brown’s 1970 epic film documentary “On Any Sunday”.

“I thought it’d be good for Nick to enter a special race like the Elsinore Grand Prix. Events like this are good publicity opportunities for our team and for Husqvarna. The course is a lot different than the desert races Nick rides with fans lining the entire course which he never sees at a desert race,” offered Davis. “The Elsinore Grand Prix has so much history and so many great riders have raced and won here. Not sure how long it’s been since a Husky rider won here but it’s been a lot of years and today was a good day for Nick Burson and Husqvarna to win it!”

Since joining Zip-Ty Racing, Burson has been a dominant desert racing force. His string of wins and top finishes have done a lot to shine a spotlight on the Husqvarna motorcycles he and the Zip-Ty Racing team compete on. Throughout the 1970s and ’80s Husqvarna was the bike of choice for desert and Baja racers and with the success of modern day riders like Burson, the brand is rekindling its past glory.

With Elsinore behind him Burson’s focus is back to the high desert and the USDR (U.S. Desert Racing) finale. He’ll enter the Nov. 15th event as both the defending 2008 Pro class #1 plate holder as well as the 2009 season points leader. Through 4 rounds Burson posted three overall wins and a runner up finish but by his own admission the 2009 title is not an absolute a slam-dunk until he suits up this weekend. “I still have to complete three laps on Sunday to clinch the title,” said Burson. “Once that’s done I’m hoping that I’ll be in a position to finish my season with another race win.”

Since winning the world DH title in September Steve Peat and the Syndicate’s stock has risen yet further. Along with 3-time UCI World Cup winner Greg Minnaar, and super-fast Junior World champion Josh Bryceland, these guys are the must haves for any media conscious sponsor in mountain biking.

This fact has not escaped the notice of Muc-Off owner Alex Trimnell. ‘Peaty’ and the rest of the Syndicate have signed to Muc-Off for 2010 to endorse all cleaning products, lubes and brushes from both the rider and bike care ranges.

The deal re-unites Peat and the Poole-based cleaning experts, after they backed him in his younger years, and associates Muc-Off with world-leading DH brands Santa Cruz Bicycles and SRAM.

Speaking about the deal Trimnell said:
